The Secrets of Adsense 2008 Part 2


1 s t Strategy – Exit Page Technique

The first strategy is particularly useful when you have a page that has high volume of
exit counts. A highly effective example is an Adsense advertisement being placed below
an online tool that checks the PageRank.
The above figure shows an online tool that returns the number of backlinks when user
enters a URL of a web page. The Adsense codes are placed directly under the tool. This
has increased my revenue since this page has a high amount of traffic exit based on my
web logs.


Why This Strategy Works?

The reason why this works is because people will start to get bored when visiting your
site and they are always on a look out on other interesting resources. Therefore, by
studying the top exit pages of your site, you can place your Adsense codes in those
pages and convert the exit traffic (since they are exiting anyway).

How To Apply This Strategy?

You should start by looking into your web logs (in Cpanel -> AwStats) and pick up the
top ten exit pages. After you have these top exit pages, look into each of these pages and
experience different placement of Adsense.
To help you understand how your traffic exit your page, you can try out CrazyEgg. This
powerful tool gives you an overview of where are your traffic clicking and this has
helped me greatly in retaining and converting those exit traffic.





2 nd Strategy – GNavigate

The second strategy focuses on the usage of a particular Adsense advertisement format,
the Horizontal Link Unit. This technique makes the Google ads appear like your internal
navigation menu, thus in the name, Gnavigate. This is the strategy that brings me the
most revenue among all other formats. Take a look at the following example:
The above is a modified screen shot from one of my site that captures a significant
amount of clicks from the traffic using the GNavigate strategy. Notice that I am using
the same colors of link as my internal links – blue.



Why This Strategy Works?

This strategy works with most Internet users because they tend to think that the site
navigation is located near the top banner of the site itself. Hence, if you make the
Adsense ads appears like your internal navigation menu (in terms of colors as well),
your visitors will click the top horizontal links looking for more information.


How To Apply This Strategy?

To optimize this strategy , you must not have another top navigation on top or below the
Adsense GNavigate ad. I normally place the internal navigation menu on the right or left
of the site.
You should also avoid placing images directly on top or below the Adsense GNavigate
ad as this will decrease your CTR. People eyes are on the images most of the time and
hence, giving less attention to your links if they are placed very near these images.
The last important factor to consider before applying this strategy is to give a small
margin (around 5 pixels each) between the top and below element of the Adsense
GNavigate. This will ease the eye movement of your visitors.

3 rd Strategy – Graceful Direct

The third strategy that I want to share with you is what I called the Graceful Direct.
There are a lot of informational sites that can utilize this powerful strategy. This strategy
works by placing Adsense after an article or near the end of a page with the hypnosis
header, 'More related information in this site'. An example is shown,

Why This Strategy Works?

Internet users will scan through your article or any page in your site most of the time and
will either click your navigation links or go to other sites. By using Graceful Direct, you
announce that there are more related information around and the next thing your visitors
will see is a set of links that looks like a normal internal navigation.
Now, there are two scenarios here. After reading the article and seeing the hypnotic
headline, your visitors will look for more information within your site (which is good as
it retains your traffic) or simply clicks on the Adsense links as there are relevant
keywords that are interested to them (good for you as it generates you revenue).



How To Apply This Strategy?

I have to stress that this method does not work in all types of sites especially those that
with little content. For this strategy to work, you must have a good amount of words in
that single page (around 400 to 800 words).
You can further optimize this strategy by increasing the font size of the hypnotic
headline, 'More related information in this site'. Make sure you bold the keywords,
'related information'.



4 th Strategy – Heaven Gifts

The last strategy that I want to share with you is known as the Heaven Gifts. There are
more and more visitors using tabbed browsing (open several tabs in a same browser)
nowadays.
This particular strategy works by placing your Adsense ads close to the top margin of
the page. This will attract accidental clicks on your Adsense ads while your visitors are
trying to click on the tabs. The following shows an example,



Why This Strategy Works?

I would say that there are over 50% of the Internet users are using tabbed browsing
when visiting the websites at the time of writing this eBook. They are constantly
clicking back and forth with the tabs in their browsers especially when they are
researching.
The more they click on the tabs, the higher the chance for them to mis-click on your
Adsense ads. The CTR here is not particularly high as compared to other strategies as
mentioned above but if you are targeting a profitable niche, this would add up to a
significant amount especially if you have a decent traffic.



How To Apply This Strategy?

You can simply place a block of Adsense ads on the very top of your web page for a
month and see if it works for your site. Keep in mind that your first priority here is to
minimize the gap between your Adsense ads and the top tabs.
